A rest at the beach

Helene is our Danish exchange-daughter.  And here was her idea:  "I thought maybe after weeks of running around you would like a bit of a rest.  So we're going to spend a few days at my father's summer cottage on the north coast of Jutland."

And so that's what we did.  Her father, and brother Jacob came along.  The wind and waves were pretty fierce along the shore:  Noralynn and I watched while the rest tested the water.   There was some rain, but we all settled down with books.  Noralynn made fried chicken, I fixed the mashed potatoes.  Helene and her father baked rolls.  No big agenda, no timetable.  It was a welcome break.

One day we took a trip up to Skagen, the northernmost point in Denmark.  Strong waves from the two seas collide here.  We spotted a tornado offshore!  There were still several World War Two German bunkers, one sporting "Room to Rent" graffiti.

Most of the buildings in the town of Skagen are painted mustard yellow, with tiles on the roof that are anchored on the edges to avoid being blown away.  The hot tea we shared for lunch was welcome on this blustery day!
