Berlin is being (re)built. It's hard to take a picture here without a crane in it; in the end you just give up. There's also a surprising amount of water (it was built on a swamp). So there are pipes everywhere to carry the water from where it's not wanted (construction sites).
There's some evidence of the war: some bits of buildings with bomb or bullet damage, often left as a reminder. There's also the holocaust memorial.
And the most present reminder of the former DDR is not the wall (the few remaining pieces are nice for posing American tourists), or Marx and Engels alone in a park.
No, every time a pedestrian crosses a street, they must wait for an Ampelmann: the little green man who wears a jaunty hat, and hurries about his business.
We met a friend at lunch: Edda, who was an exchange student with AFS Mid-Michigan last year. My delicious lunch was Berliner boulleten, with beer and bratkartoffeln. We had time for a visit to the Pergamon museum before driving home.
