Monschau and Aachen

Monschau lies within Germany's Eifel National Park.  The terrain is rugged:  lots of slate outcroppings, which are used in construction.

Our first stop was a shop that sells home-made mustards, plus wine, olive oils, and liquors.  The German for "tasty"  is "lekker".

Monschau definitely caters to tourists.  The main square is surrounded by cafes, hotels, and souvenir shops.

We hiked up to the castle, which is used as a youth hostel.  Manfred kindly hiked back to retrieve the car, while I snapped a few more pictures.

The inner chapel of the cathedral of Aachen was built by Charlemagne, in deliberate imitation of late (Roman) imperial churches in Ravenna.  The church has been carefully and beautifully restored.

Around Aachen were several shops selling "Printen", the favorite local cookie.

Ina's Belgian friend Katrin met us in the market square, and we had (more!) ice cream before wishing her a "Gute Reise":  she's off soon on an exchange to New Zealand.
